Black Walnut

$8.00
sold out

My all time favorite nut AND tree! Black Walnut grows as a massive canopy tree bearing huge crops of nuts every year. Very fast growing and late flowering so it misses frost in the spring. Beautiful leaves lend an exotic feel to the food forest landscape. Nuts have the highest protein content of any tree nut!! Flavor is unparalleled, making cultivated English walnuts taste bland by comparison. Completely unaffected by weevils which can reduce the yields of many other types of nuts. Mature wood is very rot resistant and highly valuable! Plant a grove for the grand-kids and harvest many thousands of pounds of high quality food before being able to sell the timber if so desired. I can think of few better gifts to leave behind than that! The only minor drawback is the juglone it exudes. Certain plants will struggle around walnuts but MANY others are unaffected. In fact, almost our entire inventory consists of plants that are tolerant to juglone, and some such as Paw paws and Black Raspberries positively love growing with Walnut! A rustic, rugged tree that deserves a place in every permaculture food forest. We offer seedlings from our most exceptional mother trees. At least two trees are required for pollination

‘Grandfather‘ Walnut - The most majestic walnut tree I’ve ever seen and it grows right in front of our homestead! Very large nuts have a rich, toasty flavor. Bears good crops every year. I’ve been seeking out walnut trees since my teenage years and this is by far my favorite!

‘The Provider‘ Walnut- Smaller nuts than ‘Grandfather‘ but the yields are incredible every single year. The branches produce more nuts than any tree I’ve found without fail. No good year-bad year cycle that some nut and fruit trees have.

Zones 4-9

Available as a dormant bare root tree, between 1-2 ft. tall
