Hybrid Plum
Similar to our American plums, but with larger fruits due to their mixed lineage of American and Japanese plum genetics. These are cross-pollinated seedlings from our cultivar plum tree thicket which is a mix of Toka/Bubblegum plum, South Dakota plum, and Au Rosa plum. These stellar varieties have excellent disease resistance and high yields of delicious fruit. Vigorous growth can be tremendous, often achieving several feet per year in rich soils, which can be very useful for getting above deer browse. They are easy to maintain from that point on with pruning. The suckering habit isn’t as strong as it can be with pure American types, but they will occasionally send up a few which can either be pruned off or grafted onto! The blossoms are strongly scented and thickly festoon the branches, creating a mesmerizing display in spring and great nectar flow for pollinators. Plums are intensely fruity and are best for fresh eating and fruit leather. Not ideal for prunes since they are extremely juicy. All in all they make for great additions to the food forest orchard and will be beloved by humans and wildlife alike!
