Hardy Kiwi
A vigorous vine of great beauty that bears small, sweet kiwi fruits in frigid northern landscapes! Hardy kiwi is a perfect pergola plant to provide a shady retreat from the summer sun. It will fill out quickly once established and has ornamental leaves. The fruit somewhat resembles the common kiwi in the grocery stores, just fuzz-less and in miniature. Flavor is very similar as well, even a bit sweeter. You can eat them whole as you would a grape. The real buzz about these unique, sub-tropical seeming fruits is that they are incredibly cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -30! There are no real pest or disease issues to speak of either, which is a BIG deal to organically minded folks. Pruning will definitely be a must to maintain size, as they really are vigorous growers. A sturdy trellis or arbor is ideal. Hardy kiwi is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants. 1 Male will pollinate up to 8 females.
‘Anna‘ - Green fruited female kiwi
‘Ken’s Red‘ - Red fruited female kiwi
‘Clark‘- Fruitless male kiwi used to pollinate the females
Zones 4-9, possibly 3
Ships as a dormant bare root plant
